Why do we tap the Cortices of the Brain as the primary tool in a Body Talk session? We do it to help manage the Brain Energy Budget. Yes, your Brain thinks, feels, imagines and creates. These are not its central mission however.
The scientific term for Brain Energy Budgeting is Allostasis, according to Lisa Feldman Barrett in her wonderful essay, 7 1/2 Lessons About the Brain. Allostasis means automatically predicting and preparing to meet the body’s needs before they arise. The Brain learns from experience, so this prediction is not conducted by thinking about it. Rather the body is informing the Brain through measuring and reporting its energy reserves of glucose, salts and other bodily resources that we use every day.
This is all a bit like financial budgeting and investing for a good return. Barrett says: ” Your brain continually invests your energy in the hopes of earning a good return, such as food, shelter, affection, or physical protection, so you can perform nature’s most vital task: passing your genes to the next generation.” In Body Talk we tap the Cortices of the Brain to support healthy communications within the Brain via the communication network of the neurons. This provides support and improvement of the Brain’s ability to direct the Body in using its Energy Budget.
So consider the power of purposefully balancing your Brain’s Energy Budget with Body Talk therapy. Along with good nutrition, sleep and exercise, it is the best way I know to consider the things that get out of sync with our current environment, like belief systems, habits, emotions, fear and anxiety. Good internal communication leads to balance and that is everything in maintaining our health!

“December has us thinking about presents and maybe needing a reminder to be present. I have another take on the word present for this first week of the last month of the year.
Many of us spend a lot of thought and energy on “presenting” ourselves in a certain way. This is not necessarily something that we even do consciously, but in a sense, everything we do and say is something that we are presenting to the world. This can take the form of how we dress, what we say about our jobs, our social media highlight reel, etc. Think about what you “say” to those around you by how you present yourself. I meditated on this for a while this morning and had some sincere aha moments about how I present myself and it wasn’t all neutral like I thought it was. Intermittent Fasting is big in the health news and it is very helpful for a lot of people. For some people though, Fasting is not an efficient match for their body and mind. Like any tool we pick up to use in our overall health plan, success comes from learning, trying and reflecting on how well the tool worked for the job at hand. Hunger is both a construct of calorie to energy conversion and an indicator of emotional state.
We eat to gain energy to power our bodies. We eat for enjoyment and we eat from habit. When we seek to change our hunger and eating patterns our systems sit up and pay attention to the shift. They may rebel a little resulting in constipation, nausea or lightheadedness. Preparing our energy system for the stress of the changes that fasting brings improves internal communication and provides support for the changes that the body’s chemistry are bringing about.
Sleep Hunger is another form of managing energy in the body and mind. Occasionally, we miss out on our sleep for wonderful reasons – departing for a vacation or tending to a new puppy. Regular disruptions in our sleep quality and duration are all too common and result in a system that is not prepared to function well. The Brain lacks clarity, the Immune system is weakened and Digestion is interrupted. This Sleep Hunger, like Food Hunger, is part of a cycle that includes converting nutrients and removing toxins in order to provide energy to both the physical body and to the mental emotional body. Most of us operate at some level of “hangry” in sleep pretty regularly.
The Maori, indigenous to New Zealand, say that pain, distress and dysfunction can arise from some form of fragmentation, disconnection, dyssynchrony. There’s is a result of historical trauma, and so, many of their healing practices involve “reconnection” where they articulate origins of connections in their lives and history. For many of us who experience one or more sensitizing patterns of stress in our lifetimes, there is something very healing in adopting the notion of reconnecting to a calmer time, a loving family member or a peaceful experience. When a challenge or stressor occurs, it will push us out of balance, and an internal stress response will be activated to help get us back in balance. A neurotypical stress response will be for the person to enter an alert state which will reassure them that they can return to a normal internal state. If there is evidence that there is no internal threat like hunger or cold and no external threat like the saber tooth tiger, the person becomes calm. The very common case, however, is that we often find ourselves responding in an overactive way to anything that can cause unpredictable, uncontrollable, intense or prolonged feelings of stress. How we get to overreactive states is very individual and can begin very early in life or arrive sometime later after a life altering event. Energy Therapy is one way in which we can shift out of overreaction and back into balance. Humans are deeply relational creatures who, from the beginning of life, make “memories” of the smells, sounds and images of our “people.” These early relational experiences are the most powerful and enduring. Feeling connected is key to releasing stressors that accumulate via time and trauma. Balancing our systems with our earliest autobiographical memory returns our system to calm and connectedness no matter what has happened in the intervening time.
According to Barbara A. Holmes, author of Joy Unspeakable: Contemplative Practices of the Black Church, in the “olden days,” it was the legacy of the healers with the support of the community that made the ill well again. There would be the healer, somebody’s Aunt who collected the roots and herbs and made the teas to heal the physical disorder. But it was understood that the tea would only address the physical ailment and that sickness required healing of spiritual disorders as well.
There were prayers and intercessions, talk at the table and whispers at church. And since everyone knew when someone was sick, the healing process became the interest of all members of the community. Without doctors or medical insurance, it fell to the community to lavish a great deal of attention on the ailing person. This reminds me a lot of how much attention I received as a child when I was sick – mom leaning over me feeling my brow, dad coming in to sit on the end of the bed, siblings being hushed so I could rest. In both cases it was impossible to determine whether healing occurred because of medicinal effects or the care and concern of the community.
So, the handed down knowledge of the Aunt, the focus and intention of the community, and the chemistry of the medicine or tea all represent energy therapy to support the ailing. From the ancestors and nature come the medicine and from the community comes the vibration to bring together a healing outcome. This is powerful knowledge in a time where we pivot back and forth from Western medicine to alternative therapies in order to customize wellness for ourselves. It is so important to also have our needs known in the community and to receive the focus on renewed health from others. It’s in all our best interests for each of us to heal.
As most of you know, the energy therapy we do in the office is nondiagnostic and works directly with the communication systems of the body and its priorities for health. We do, however, listen to the symptoms the body is presenting to get your attention and guide you in the direction of health. This month the topic is tinnitus as many people suffer either occasionally or frequently with a ringing in the ears. If you are one of the 20-25% of the population who experiences tinnitus, you know it can be frustrating to just grin and bear it. Sometimes it is the result of a loud noise or age related hearing loss. Equally common is that tinnitus is part of a circulatory problem. Body Talk is helpful in all three of these cases and I have seen especially strong improvement when we balance the Lymph System with the Central Nervous System. This balance can improve sleep quality which is the gold standard of healing the body, and, in turn, alleviate the tinnitus. You can start today to relieve ringing in the ears, even before we do a balance session. First, acknowledge all the times you don’t have the ringing – it comes and goes and usually doesn’t get worse over time. Then, massage your scalp with the palms of both hands to the sides of the head above and behind the ears. Do this every day for about 5 days. You can also use earbuds or white noise in your environment. In a full balance session, we can address the places where communication has clogged up and broken down. The energy can flow well again with an improved emotional and physical outcome.
Spirit always moves within us. Therefore, we are always new.
What are you doing about the stress that builds up in your life? If it manifests as a headache, poor digestion or unrestful sleep, you probably reach for a remedy. If it manifests as a sore muscle, tight jaw or misaligned spine, you head to the sports clinic or chiropractor. But your fate is a clear example of what happens when stress goes untended and unreleased, when these warning signs go unheeded and we are shortsighted about the physical underpinnings of our daily lives. These underpinnings are our infrastructure. They include aging organs and muscles, emotions that have gnawed at us for decades, our sense of safety and community both local and global. This infrastructure is vulnerable to accumulated stress and will eventually fail. When we work with energy to continually reinforce our sense of wellbeing and our body’s ability to offload stress, we are supporting the very basis of our construction as physical beings. Energy is frequency and vibration that informs and shapes structure. The better it flows, the sturdier we remain. So, meditation, rest, breathing and nature are what we want to reach for to maintain our infrastructure and when we realize that we have a sagging bridge or a road full of potholes that pose a bigger risk to our infrastructure, we get some energy therapy to make the repairs. Let’s look at the little three letter name of this month, MAY. By definition, the word MAY can either signify a possibility or a permission. “It may rain today.” “May I come over to your house?” In our energy, in our very DNA, we are constantly considering the possibilities and granting or withholding permissions.
When we use “may” as a possibility, it often carries a frequency of something gone wrong. For example, we say, “The explosion may have been caused by a faulty electrical connection.” ” People who suffer a stroke may experience a loss of speech.” These are the examples offered in the Cambridge Dictionary for using the word to mean a possibility. The mind is often seeking balance between a couple of sets of data – this takes energy to do and when the evaluation of the data goes on and on, we may get further away from understanding and deciding. We certainly are expending energy and leaving less for health and healing.
As a permission, “may” relies on a balance of power. ” A reader may borrow up to six books at any one time.” “Earl, you may go now.” A decision must be granted for us to respond to the limit placed on this use of the word. Permissions is a place where our energy resources are constantly in use. We allow ourselves to be treated certain ways. We wrestle some with whether we are autonomous beings or subjects permitted to cross the street, to meet a deadline, to cut our hair, to vote!
This past 12 months has bestowed unexpected blessings on many of us. For the group of you readers who join me for weekly distance balance sessions, the blessing was a glorious process of clearing the stresses almost exactly when they landed. Every day and every week provides us with a couple of shocks to the system and by balancing continuously every week, we relieve stress and promote health as we keep on doggy paddling to the other side of the pandemic. This wasn’t a model of energy therapy I had been taught or might have ever envisioned. It has been so powerful and gentle at the same time. Like any healthy practice, the results come over time. Non-contact energy healing techniques have been used all over the world for thousands of years. They are widely used to treat a range of medical and mental health problems. This type of healing engages with the biofield and is based on the assumption that there is an energetic principle that exists in and around humans and all life forms that when out of balance can manifest in physical or emotional symptoms.
Energy therapy can correct such imbalances and help restore good health. There is a dearth of scientific research to explain or demonstrate the mechanism underlying energy or biofield therapy, which I think represents the limitations of current science, which lacks methods capable of verifying the role of quantum mechanics in energy therapies like Reiki, Body Talk, Acupuncture, Light Healing and so on. That said, I see a bright light at the end of the tunnel as more evidence based research is appearing every month often with measuring equipment attached to it. From the EEG, EKG and MRI to Fitbit, Oura, Heartmath, JOOOV, and Centerpointe technologies, the ability of science to measure blood pressure, heart rate and temperature changes and coupled with objective responses like stress reduction, calmer breathing and muscle relaxation are findings that suggest energy therapies can provide significant improvements in health and recovery from trauma and illness. The next step is to find and work with a practitioner skilled in the manipulation of energy and without needing to engage with technology to do so. A hand is a pretty powerful awareness tool.
